Tracking202.com – It’s About Time
Remember last Sunday when I wrote about the Perfect Keyword Tracker? Well, I still haven't found the perfect tracker but the latest release from Tracking202TM just might be the closest thing to it. Where other tracking sites have failed to set the bar all that high, this site seems to rise above. Oh, and did I mention it's free? Yeah, that's right. Free.
Normally, I'd rant and rave about how other keyword trackers are lacking, but I feel I did enough of that in the Perfect Keyword Tracker post. So I'll just jump straight into the good stuff.
Keep It Simple, Stupid
As you probably know already if you follow the blog, I don't like keyword trackers in general. Not only is it difficult to implement, but it's hard to find tutorials on how to implement the stupid code. Well, Tracking202.com currently offers seven videos to get you started, not just with using Tracking202 but on how to track keywords in general and even how to get started with affiliate marketing altogether.
I've watched a few of them and they're pretty good. Definitely give them a view (click here).
Setting It Up
As the video tutorials will show you, it's not difficult to set up your campaigns, ads, etc. for easy tracking. It's broken down into six easy steps-
- PPC Accounts - These are your search engines like Adword, YSM and Adcenter.
- Affiliate Networks- These are your affiliate networks like Azoogle, Commission Junction, Neverblue, etc.
- Affiliate Campaigns - This is the particular offer you are pushing and you can give it any name you like, as long as you know what it's referring to.
- Text Ads - These are your actual ads you're running, text and all.
- Landing Pages - Step five is optional and allows you to track your actual landing page statistics.
- Get Trackers - This is the page that gives you detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to implement code for each campaign you're running. This means you should pay close attention to every word on the page as it will affect your tracking.
Obviously you can skip over some of these steps as you start adding tracking code to additional campaigns, but I just wanted to express how simple these guys have made the initial setup, which is key to keeping customers.
The Overview Tab
As you can see in this screen cap, right away you can see a visual indicator of how much you're spending, earning and keeping. All very important things to see when you're trying to maintain a certain level of profit. Of course, you can filter by date and display by hour, day, month, etc. All of this graphing is done with flash, so it's very smooth.
The Analyze & Visitors Tabs
On these screens, you can analyze your keywords, your ads, referers, IP addresses, etc. All very useful when trying to determine which ads work the best and which keywords actually convert. Many times, your main problem is a high CTR on a keyword so you want to keep it, but a low conversion rate. With this feature, you can see what the actual conversion rate is and therefore, make a quick decision as to whether or not to keep the ad or keyword. Not to mention, you can easily tell which search engine is pulling in the most traffic or which search engine is flat-out killing your profit margin.
The Spy Tab
Now here's an interesting twist on a feature I'd imagine was inspired directly by the Digg Spy feature. It's a live AJAX view of your incoming traffic for the last 24 hours. It's currently my favorite feature because I just like to see people coming in, but I have to watch the access logs to do so. This interface is a nice, clean view of helpful information.
RSS Feeds
Again, a really cool feature. You can use your RSS reader to view your Account Summary, Visitors, Keywords and Referers, which is really cool for not just keeping track of all of that info but importing it elsewhere via XML. Here's where I'm concerned about this feature. If anyone decided to do a sweep of the alphanumeric code (which is randomly generated but I'm guessing is a standard length), then they could probably view tons of peoples' vital information easily and permanently. To combat this, I would suggest not just an SSL connection but perhaps a long-term cookie that gets set so that only specific people can view the feeds. That's just off the top of my head. Aside from the risks, this is obviously a winning feature.
The Update Tab
This is where you import your SubID dumps and actual Cost Per Click for your campaigns. This is easy for even the newest of the new, as they just have to copy and paste the information straight into do a SubID dump and just update their actual average cost per click to get accurate data. Very straight forward and useful.
Extras
Tracking202 offers a forum to get help from other users as well as administrators. They also offer a blog for updates and information on affiliate marketing in general. All the way to the right, you'll notice the Videos tab as I previously mentioned. If you've read my past posts, you know I think videos should be included in any application like this, just to explain how everything is supposed to be done, not just how one might intuitively do it (what, intuition can be wrong?).
Conclusion
Although some people might be bothered by the fact that this software is free, the authors are doing everything possible to ensure that your data is protected. I've been chatting back and forth with one of the authors for a couple of weeks now; he's a nice guy and listens when I make suggestions. I made a suggestion to him about the RSS hole and he's going to bring it up at their next meeting.
As far as features go, it's not too feature heavy but what it does have is really impressive. I've seen much more expensive software that might be shiny, but it's very clunky to use and easy to screw up on. Also, these guys are just starting out and will begin to build onto the platform as they go along.
Overall, I think these guys have done the affiliate marketing world a great favor by releasing this software as free. I know, for some people, the word 'free' in an application like this might set off a red flag. I'm aware of this. The developer is aware of this. They know that if Google were to release something like this, there would be no issue but since it's the little guy, there's going to be a lot of hesitation as there seems to be a lack of accountability and past performance to base trust on. I think the early joiners will be happy with the application and will inspire the skeptical to jump aboard as well.
If you're at the least bit worried about this being a legitimate company, feel free to view their registration information with USPTO as well as their corporation information. I've also been notified that they'll soon implement Verisign RSS as well as HackerSafe, TRUSTe certifications. And they'll be implementing a BBB (Better Business Bureau) certification when possible. These guys mean business, ladies and gents.
After all, it's hard to beat free. Go give Tracking202 a try and let me know what you think!

These free tools are really useful for people just starting out and wary of their initial outlay.

Very good review
A lot better than mine! I use Tracking202 as well… I must say that it’s a very useful tool. It’s definitely worth a try especially since it’s free..

Theres a lot of rumors going around about this site, recently i saw a post on wicked fire i think where a rep or the guy who runs the site posted on there about the site and was telling everyone. Well anyway if you’ve been to wickedfire you know those guys are a pretty crazy group of people so they started calling the guy out saying it was just a way for them to spy and steal your campaigns.
Well thats pretty fair assumption but i din’t expect the person who made the post to respond back the way he did. He went off saying some pretty unprofessional things and i honestly thought the person behind this was 16 or something. I dont know if he was a rep or not but i already made my decision to stay away from these guys. Although im not a baller I would think twice about all these “free” tools.

oh and honestly ask your self this.
They have the power to look at all your stats, even if they say they will never look, you really think if you got a guy on your site making like 30,000$ a day your not gonna wanna take a peak and see what hes doing thats so successful?
February 8th, 2008 at 4:55 am
That is exactly what I thought. It’s enough that Google knows everything about my business. I wouldn’t want a brand new company to see my stats too.

Hey Scott, thanks for the review on Tracking202, appreciate it and will see about sending some traffic back your way for the help, anything else I can do in return I’d be more than happy to do.
Hey Will,
In response to your question: That was I who made the initial post about Tracking202 on WickedFire. I made a mistake and I should have thought of a better way to promote on WF because as you’ve seen, it didn’t turn out to be a positive experienced. Lesson learned, so I’m to blame for that marketing pus.
I’m not the best writer in the world, so I could see what you mean if I may have appeared unprofessional in my post, again I should have approached that differently and made a mistake on there. Although I hope what you read from my post, is what I actually written, because I’m aware the moderators to make it look like I posted negative comments edited that some of my original posts.
Although I disagree with them re-writing comments in my own name to make me personally look like a despicable human being, I know it was ultimately my fault by promoting our product in the forums the way we did, which is the result that I at the end of the day, brought about upon myself.
In response to the last question, honestly no we would not want to take a look at what someone is doing to earn $30,000 a day because by doing that we are lying to our users, and violating the trust that they have with us. We are interested in long-term relationships with our users by building trust and helping each other out, the $30,000/day is easy not to look at when you value the integrity of the relationship more than money can buy.

No thanks, I’ll keep my data to myself. Revealing this data to yourself is one of the most important things when PPC marketing, why would I reveal it to someone else?
February 8th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Whats up with you having the same post topic on the same day as UberAffiliate? It seems to be a recent trend among the blogers I visit to all talk about the same thing whats up with that?
T202 is a great service but before I use it they need to make a standalone version to install on my own server.
February 9th, 2008 at 12:05 am
@Beer: The review was requested by the same guy and Paul and I just happened to post it on the same day. That’s about it.
Yeah, making a stand-alone version would rule out a lot of the risk factors involved with pushing your data to someone else’s server but that would require a whole different level and type of support. We’ll see which direction they choose to go in.
February 9th, 2008 at 2:06 am
Hey Beer,
Scott was actually first to the punch, the review by UberAffiliate was actually unexpected, we had no idea he was going to do that. It of course was a nice of him to do that, but Scott was actually before UberAffiliate. Not that it is much important but just to clarify!
We are already debating back and forth within T202 of doing the stand-a-lone package, nothing is for sure it is a hard call with long-term impacts both good and bad, so we are going to be discussing it for a long time to make sure everything is done the best possible way.
February 10th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
By day I still work at a SEO/SEM agency and you would not believe the number of clients we get that refuse to install GA so we can track results. Many of our clients have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars on tracking software such as omniture just because its in house.
It may not be easy but if you sell the package for a single price or for a leased install many more of us will bite. Also Jonathan Volk is claiming that his new Affiliate Unleashed program that is starting soon will provide tracking similar to T202, just something to keep in mind.
Sorry to bug you about the post but early this week everyone had the same post about that guy gaming adwords and then the T202 stuff.. I just wouldn’t want to see his as a new trend.

Needs to be hosted on our servers. Otherwise it’s just too risky.
February 11th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Yeah, both great points. I agree that it seems more risky unless you can host it on your own server or unless a giant is the one providing the service. Despite the best intentions of the service provider, the end-user is just more hesitant to store financial credentials/data on the site of a small company. It sucks for that company but it’s reality, and in the end, that’s what matters.
February 14th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Looks good but would be a lot better if we can host on our own server like others have said.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
So far, Wes appears to be a fairly honest person and although, you guys bring up a good point about hosting your own software, you have to consider the cost involve with doing that. I myself am new at this aff marketing game and having this free is a blessing. If I do well, yea, I’ll have more options, but for those that are just starting, hey, these guys at tracking202 are providing good vids and offers a killer product for FREE.
Just my two cents.

Got a good post. I am also always looking for better tracking website and already tired a lot of paid one but the stuff is almost same.
