Affiliates, Be The Best Or Die
Let's be honest for a second. Most people starting out in this business just won't stick with it for the long run. You'll have your people who quit when they don't make a sale right away, people who quit once they figure out they can make sales but it's not easy and then you'll have people who are somewhat successful for a while but can't quite tame the mad bull that is Affiliate Marketing.
So you're thinking "that is very uninspiring." You're right. For the majority of people who want to stop working for someone else, it's a depressing notion to think that you can't succeed at something where so many people are making money due to the aforementioned filtration system. But what you might not see right away is the beauty in the filter- for those of you who stick with it, your chances of being successful go way up. On top of that, you have this blog to give you that extra edge and strategy that will push you just that much further.
But what is the difference between someone who gets past the taming of the bull and someone who climbs the mount Everest of super affiliate status? Quitting. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I've been inspired by Seth Godin and thus, I urge you to be inspired to quit.
Quit what, you ask? Well, anything that you aren't the best at, just stop that thing. If your heart and soul isn't in it, stop it. Without falling in love with what you're doing, you can't very well expect other people to do so. If that means you can't be the best salesman for a particular niche, stop that. If it means affiliate marketing isn't what strikes your passion, stop that. With regard for intelligence and business savvy, do what you love.
If you're like me, you're guilty of spreading yourself too thin. Despite my small success with affiliate marketing (being in the $1,000-2,000/day range), I'm still not the best I could be because I do other things. I do those other things because I'm constantly coming up with ideas but the more I start, the more I have to manage on a daily basis and the less time I have with my family.
I've heard and read that there are people making $500,000/day on average in this business. That is -- per hour, ladies and gents -- more than some poor blokes make in a year. It's ridiculous is what it is and for some, it's discouraging. To me, that's enormously inspiring. That means that someone is the best at something and they're exploiting it to its maximum potential. They stopped spreading themselves among twenty projects they were giving a moderate effort to and began focusing huge effort toward one or two projects that rocketed them to success.
That's where you want to be and it's where I want to be, so we should pay attention, shouldn't we? Godin's right. Quit that which you aren't truly passionate about and fight to the death through those things that are difficult at first, but will yield the fruit of your labor later on. Yes, I'm talking about Seth Godin's "dip," and unless you can push through it, you're sunk baby. So go get yourself a copy of The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick) and inspire yourself to push through the hard times.
"Nothing worthwhile is ever easy." --Unknown
I find it hard to disagree. Those of you with the tenacity to stick out those goals you have and make it through the dip until they're reached will inevitably be wealthy beyond measure and those of you who get stick in that dip -- well, you're toast baby.

Great post on this subject. I just got started in affiliate marketing a few months back and so far I’ve seen some pretty nice results. A lot of people around me don’t think that I can make a substantial additional income though.
Well I’m out to prove them wrong this year and I’m looking to build on the success that I’ve already had. You get out of things what you put into them.

@ClarkeW: Thanks and yeah, you’re right. Make sure you take advantage of all the information on this blog, as it’s what most people spend a lot paying for in eBooks and such.
