What You Can Learn From People You’ll See In Hell
Jeff over at People You'll See In Hell recently posted a contest with two purposes in mind: 1) Humor and 2) Link Bait. The rules of the contest are simple, you enter the contest to win half of the earnings of the website for the entire month of December. The other half goes to the political candidate that gets the most votes in the poll listed on the site. Currently, the winner is Ron Paul but it could really go to anyone by month's end.
The funny part is that the winning candidate will be receiving a donation from said blog and hopefully the news story will go something like this:
Barack Obama Receives Donation From People You'll See In Hell
Hah! Funny, if you don't know the context of the donation. What's great about this is that it's a decent example of viral marketing. As you can see, this thing got submitted to Digg and is already near 100 on its own. In fact, last night the site was suspended at several points due to CPU overload.
So what can you learn from this? Well, not only is Jeff increasing his reader base by doing this but also his chances of getting more income in the future. Since he's drawn attention to sink money into the website, via donations, adsense clicks or affiliate marketing clicks, people will continue to show interest after the contest. It's a pretty basic lesson, but it's not as shallow as it seems. Hopefully, People You'll See In Hell will end up on the news and Jeff's reader base will skyrocket.
If you're interested in registering for the contest, check out the details here (People You'll See In Hell Gets All Political And Stuff).

Or the story will get buried and Jeff will get rocks thrown at his door by random children running through the neighborhood.

It’s just amazing the way words can effect people, or catch their attention! I love it, the whole idea is great! Just wish I would have thought of it first
