You may have heard the term 'Affiliate Marketing' floating around and you might not be so sure what it is and what it's all about. Well, here's the Wikipedia definition:

Affiliate marketing is a web-based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts.

Of course, most businesses wouldn't benefit from rewarding an affiliate with bringing mere visitors to their site; The money is in referring sales and customers. If you aren't familiar with the process, here's a diagram (again, from Wikipedia) about how the process works:

How Affiliate Marketing WorksAs you can see, the customer goes to the affiliate's website and is redirected to the buyer/seller's page, where hopefully some kind of transaction will take place.

Each time that transaction takes place, the affiliate is rewarded for their efforts with a pre-determined percentage or amount.

Since this is typically a one-time deal and the customer will most likely be a repeat customer for the buyer/seller, the affiliate's compensation is generally higher than the average sale might be. This works out great in favor of both parties as affiliates typically spend a decent amount of money on marketing to get the customers to go to their referral link.

So you might be wondering how this would benefit your business. Well, if you spend any kind of money on advertising, affiliate marketing is for you.

See, the beauty of the concept is that you (the business) only pay for actual sales or completed transactions of some type. That's right, you only pay for sales that otherwise wouldn't have been there. Traditionally, businesses would spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to build name recognition and an influx of customers. Now, businesses can minimize or eliminate their own advertising budget and allow other people to advertise for them.

While this might result in a lesser initial profit, the idea behind this concept is to eliminate up-front costs of advertising and pay much more attention to keeping and marketing to your customer base, rather than strangers. It's sales 101 knowledge that someone who is already your customer is more likely to buy again than someone who isn't.

You might be wondering exactly how the affiliate marketing model fits into your business. While I can't blanket every business with a general statement, I will say:

  1. Read this blog from start to finish in order to get a better grasp on the business model.
  2. If your business utilizes a website, investigate affiliate software or plugins you can embed in your current system.
  3. Reward your affiliates and your affiliates will reward you (cheesy but true).

So put your business on the cutting edge and implement this highly efficient system. Not only will your sales go up but you'll be helping lots of other people (your affiliates) to generate decent income. It's the right thing to do.
